Nok

As one of the earliest civilizations in West Africa, the Nok seemed to have been very advanced. The Nok lived in modern day Nigeria around 500 BC to AD 200. The Nok seemed to have skipped the Copper and Bronze Age and jump into the Iron Age. They were the first West African tribe known to smelt iron. The iron was used for everyday things like tools for farming and weapons for hunting. Artifacts found around the Niger and Benue rivers, proven to be the Nok's, proves that the Nok might've traded with the Djenné-Djeno and other tribes around these rivers. Some artifacts being their iron tools and weapons found on overland trade routes.

The Nok, also from Nigeria, were located there for many years. Nigeria, like their ancestors, use their agriculutural land for cocoa, cotton, and many root crops. As the Nok traded with other civilizations, Nigeria, now, exports their goods. Although, no human trace of the Nok tribe are found in Nigeria. Artifacts are all that proves one of Nigeria's many ancestors. The government of Nigeria is a federal republic but their is no sign left behind that shows the Nok had established a government of a sort. The Nok tribe has been long gone but Nigeria still holds on to their ancestors behaviors while advancing just like the Nok.

This a terracotta clay artifact. It was proven to be one of the Nok's because of the unique style. The eloganted head. Some of the hairstyles used in the terracotta clay artifacts are still used in Nigeria today.
